The word xeriscaping is a portmanteau of “xeros” (Greek for “dry”) and landscape.

Xeriscaping and xerogardening refer to landscaping and gardening in ways that reduce or eliminate the need for supplemental irrigation. Plants whose natural requirements are appropriate to the local climate are emphasized, and care is taken to avoid losing water to evaporation and run-off. This is achieved though the use of weather-sensed timers, drip irrigation systems and careful mulching. The specific plants used in xeriscaping depend upon the climate. Some common plants used in Western xeriscaping are agave, aloe vera, cactus, and other succulents, lavender, juniper, sedum, rosemary and thyme.

We incorporate Xeriscaping in our planter box designs. We use weather-sensing timers along with a combination of specialized drip irrigation and mulching techniques that keep the soil moist, bring maximum yields of fresh vegetable while using minimal water.

•     Xeriscape plants along with proper bed design tends to take full advantage of rainfall

•     When water restrictions are implemented, xeriscape plants will tend to survive, while most traditional plants are unable to adapt.

•     No fertilizers, pesticides or chemical additives are needed with native vegetation

•     Better ground saturation and less urban runoff to ocean.

•     A good Xeriscape can raise property values, which more than offset the cost of installation. Protect your landscaping investment by drought-proofing it.
